Does anyone know how many amps the stainless steel MES 40 draws? I've read on their site that it is 1200 watts. It seems to me that one needs to know how many amps it draws to select the appropriate solid state relay and heat sink if installing a PID.

If I'm not mistaken I think as a rule of thumb you can figure a amp per watt so I would say about 12 amps to be safe. But I could be wrong

If the wattage is 1200 then the amperage at 120 volts would be 10. 

volts x amps = watts

Technically Marco is correct but your figurin' gives wiggle room. In this case you want a relay that is rated larger than your max current draw. Whomever told you that method may have been oldschool and well experienced. Shortcuts are not alway a bad thing...

I don't remember the how told me that but I have always went by it even when I wired up my shop years ago and have never had a problem.

I doubt anybodies house burnt down from installing too thick a wire...JJ

I couldn't remember the calculation. I agree, though, that larger wire is usually a good thing.
