I have been browsing the forums for a long time and finally joined. I finally bought my first smoker. From what I have read on the forums I think I got a really good deal, and I wanted to share it with ya'll.

Any advice for a newbie with this smoker? This is a Gen 1 Smoker correct? I haven't opened it yet so I can take it back if I need to.

This greatly upsets me. 3+ years ago I bought a MES 30 Gen 1 without a window and remote and not made of stainless steel off Amazon for $189. If I would've waited (and I couldn't) for ten bucks more I could've had this.

What this is is a Gen 1 smoker with the redesigned top controller. This is the best electric smoker you'll find anywhere for $199. Great job.

Bentley, Glad I was able to help you out. I am supper pumped to go home tonight and season the smoker. Maybe tomorrow I can get a chance to try and make something on it.

Someone posted this on reddit but there isn't an Academy anywhere near me. (sadface teardrop) I have a WSM and I built a UDS (which I absolutely love!!!) but I've been in the market for an electric smoker for Wintertime smoke antics. Anyhow...

For anyone who doesn't live near an Academy, and if you don't feel like paying for shipping, WALMART WILL PRICE MATCH. Mine arrives Friday for free. Just call up Walmart customer service and in about 20 minutes, they'll approve the price match. SCOOOOOOORE!!!!

Make sure it is a gen1 when you go pick it up, wallyworld has been known to screw things up.

I currently have one of the 30" mes from bass pro. It's the odd one with the stainless front door. I have been wanting to upgrade it to a digital mes. Is this the one I should go pick up? Especially for the price? Is there another I should get instead?

I can't speak to the quality since I'm a new owner, but it was 210 dollars out the door which seems to be quite a bit cheaper than the typical going rate. I probably sound like a broken record but all you have to do is call Walmart to price match and it'll be at your doorstep 3 days later.

Just make sure. whether Academy or Walmart, that the Model # is 20070311 for the all Stainless 40"...JJ

memphis212 I just purchased the one your talking about and its a great price. If price isn't a concern there's a Bluetooth model out there but much more expensive. I like it simple.

Is it worth the upgrade? I'm OK with mine but without the box being insulated it has some trouble staying at temp for long. So it goes up and down a lot causing me to turn the temp higher to compensate. Also I have trouble with my amps jumping over to next row and then going out of control in it.

I have to agree the more gadgets it has the more stuff can go wrong.

memphis212 I live in South Carolina and it went down to 36 degrees F while I was smoking. Didn't effect the smoker at all. The insulation is great and probably recommended in colder climates. It still serves a purpose even in mild climate too. Constant temp. is important just like in a refrigerator. If your amps is jumping over try not putting to many pellets in the tray. Keep pellets away from top of rows.

If that MES 40 is still in stock at that price, go for it if you have the money. It may be a while until you see a deal on that unit again--if ever. I wish I had the money to buy one now.

I went ahead and picked it up. Setting it all up right now about to season it. The quality between this one and my 30" non digital is a major difference. Almost like it was two different companies.
