Like to thank the folks who have been offering guidance on another thread...

Going to start with a 12" Lodge skillet that the Boss found at a thrift store..
I wired wheeled it a while back and thanks to my ignorance seasoned it with Canola oil. Used it a few times to cook bacon on one of the Eggs, nothing stuck. But Ernie has been struggling with the 10.25" skillet that I seasoned so figured I might as well do it the right way....

What I started with. Had a small puddle of oil in it from the Boss spraying it with an excessive amount of cooking oil. I sprayed it with oven cleaner and let it sit...barely touched the finish. Into the garage and got to work with the angle grinder with various wire wheels....

After the first coat. I am using our old gas grill. While back we found a birds nest with some eggs in it. Opened it a few days afterwards and found a pair of snakes in it...

If you have a self cleaning oven, you can clean your cast iron in there. That won't leave any scratches or marks. Then brush off the soot, wash it well, coat with a thin layer of vegetable oil, and season it starting an hour before bedtime. Bake it for an hour at 400°, turn off the oven, and let the dutch cool in the oven over night.
If you season cast in the BBQ, it will blacken faster than in the oven, because there will be smoke that will attach to the oil as it enamels your iron. Be sure there is no oil pooled, as it will boil up, and not bake on, leaving bare spots.
I use and maintain about 40 various cast iron utensils, including dutch ovens, skillets, griddles, chicken fryers, bread and muffin pans, etc.I hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mine!

Flax is the only way to go. When done properly you end up with a bomb proof finish. Now don't let anyone wash that pan with soap!

Sadly breakfast just stuck to it. She washed and dried it, hit it with some cooking spray, heated it to water sizzles and breakfast the Eggs still stuck...

I am no expert in CI but my experience with flaxseed oil was not as great as I expected. You do get a nice coat, feels smooth, looks great but it doesn't last. Woodcutter (more seasoned in seasoning than me) seemed to have the same problems.

Back to bacon grease for me.

Today's victim....a 10" Lodge skillet and lid that I did a Canola oil seasoning over the factory seasoning.
Would like to thank Case for his suggestion on using the weed burner to remove the seasoning. I used my old UDS instead of the gravel.. got two young crazy Redbone Coonhounds that would have been a problem.
Also this is our sauce cup after 2 Flaxseed cycles...
