HEB in Texas has been running port butts, cryo wrapped, bone in, for 97¢ a pound for the last week or so. I picked up a couple in the middle of last week. I didn't pay much attention to anything but size when I got them; but when I opened them up for the wash up and rub, I found that one of them still had the pork skin intact. I've never bought one with the skin still on the butt before. Knowing that pigskin is tough enough to kick around all day in a pasture (Andy Griffith's What It Was Was Football), I took my boning knife and cut the skin off leaving as much of the fat as I could.

When you buy cryo-packed butts, are then skinned or not?

I've never seen one with skin on. A picnic is another story. I think yours slipped through, cause a butt by classification has the skin removed.

Item No. 406 - Pork Shoulder, Boston Butt

This item is as described in Item No. 403except that the picnic is removed as described in Item No. 405. Skin, neck bones and related cartilage shall be removed. At least traces of false lean shall be exposed. When specified, the neck shall be removed by a straight cut approximately parallel to the loin side, immediately anterior to the pectorales profundus.

I've got six of them in the freezer and smoked two a week or so ago.  They were also from HEB and no skin on the two.  Maybe one just got past someone at the plant.

I'd like to get some pork buts for that price...Safeway in Eastern WA has them for $1.79 LB. Which for here is a good deal, payed $2.79 LB for a butt last weekend...guess I was a little early...

Damn 99 cents and it comes with the makins of Pork Rinds,I'd be all over that.

Thanks, folks!

I think it was just a one-off that I happened on. I will look more carefully from now on when buying.

Yep. 99¢ a pound is a no brainer for me on pork butts. Now, if I could just find whole briskets at that price . . .
