Pretty sure I understand. Have a question or tow...will be easier to understand with a sketch involved....now I just need to find someone who can draw.....Sooo... If I understand correctly, you are building a pan to easily remove wood ash from the FB.... If you install the wood grate 3" up, from the bottom, have the rear lip, on the pan, about 2 1/2" tall... the sides the same and the front lip about 3/4" tall..... the high sides will keep the ash from falling off the sides and back.... the 3/4" front lip will still allow for very good air flow to keep the fire going and that air flow will "push" the ash toward the back of the FB..... I would also slope the sides of the ash pan.... see the drawing and try and figure out what I'm talking about.....
Thanks....was hoping to get a chance to work up a sketch of my thoughts on my door today....but between cooking and struggling with a side panel for the top of the skin of the firebox just didn't get to it...perhaps tomorrow. Looks like we will be running our 13 year old Queensland Heeler to the vet tomorrow. She has what looks to be an eye infection of sorts. Hope she has not lost the sight in her one eye....
