How much capacity is really needed? Smoker is based on a 60 air compressor tank. Firebox is 19.25" wide/18.75" deep & 23" tall. Firebox is insulated, door will be as well. Picked up some square stock that I will be using to span the door skins, don't want to end up cramping the fire with an overly large ash pan....

learned a VERY valuable lesson yesterday....if I ever build another one using a compressor tank I will remove all the bungs from the FB side prior to mounting the FB. Botched my first attempt at sealing the hole. Ended up spending a good portion of yesterday heating/hammering a plate to match the dome shape. Had just enough room to get the mig gun at the bottom. Sure glad I bought that torch rig from Craigslist

Sooo... If I understand correctly, you are building a pan to easily remove wood ash from the FB.... If you install the wood grate 3" up, from the bottom, have the rear lip, on the pan, about 2 1/2" tall... the sides the same and the front lip about 3/4" tall..... the high sides will keep the ash from falling off the sides and back.... the 3/4" front lip will still allow for very good air flow to keep the fire going and that air flow will "push" the ash toward the back of the FB..... I would also slope the sides of the ash pan.... see the drawing and try and figure out what I'm talking about.....

Pretty sure I understand. Have a question or tow...will be easier to understand with a sketch involved....now I just need to find someone who can draw.....

will give it an attempt later on tonight.....after I measure some of the planned scrap metal I picked up....Thanks for the info....

Ink, very nice recovery on the dome!!

Thanks....was hoping to get a chance to work up a sketch of my thoughts on my door today....but between cooking and struggling with a side panel for the top of the skin of the firebox just didn't get to it...perhaps tomorrow. Looks like we will be running our 13 year old Queensland Heeler to the vet tomorrow. She has what looks to be an eye infection of sorts. Hope she has not lost the sight in her one eye....
