Creamed Dried Beef on Toast & Pan Fried Taters

Truly A Pennsylvania Favorite!!

We don’t eat this often at the Bear Den, because I love my Cold Dried Beef & Cheese Sammies too much.

However being 50% PA Dutch & 50% PA German, every now and then I get the Urge, and Mrs Bear is 50% PA German too, and she loves this stuff.

If you live in a big Pennsylvania Dutch & PA German area like we do, you gotta lock the doors to enjoy this stuff !!!

Doesn’t take much—Some Home Smoked Dried Beef is best, plus Butter, Flour, and Milk is all we use.

Then Dump it on top of two slices of Toast. (Actually I put a little on the plate, then a slice of Toast, then some more mix, then the other slice of Toast, then some more on top of that)

We call it Creamed Dried Beef on Toast, some call it Creamed Chipped Beef on Toast. They’re both right.
Just don’t call it SOS, because that’s made with Ground Beef. Just look at the stuff made with Ground Beef, and you can see why they call it “SOS”. This stuff is a whole lot better tasting!!

My First Plate will be Mrs Bear’s Pan Fried Taters. She Bakes the Taters first, then she peels & slices them up & fries them Partially Golden Brown in a Pan with Butter.

So that’s about it, other than the Pics Below!

Thanks For Stopping By,

Bear

Looks good, Bear!

Bear, that looks great, haven't had it in a long time, not sure if my wife likes it or not, but I sure do.  SOS isn't bad either, but it's better made your way.

Thanks

Bear,

I love dried beef but never liked the cream aspect of it. Am I still allowed to live in PA?? Lol! But I will eat my weight in scrapple!

I haven't had chipped beef (what we called it) since I was a kid. Maybe my palette has changed. Wanna send me a sample?

Thanks Ed!!

Yup---I never cared for the stuff they made in the Army. Their's was really SOS, made with Ground Beef, and it was like they dried it up & then put it in gravy. I found it very hard to swallow!!

Sure you belong in PA !!

I actually like my Dried Beef more in a cold Sandwich with American Cheese & Miracle Whip (Mayo if you don't like MW).

Looks great Bear!

Yeah, my Mom was German, and she just called it "chipped beef on toast".  A quick and easy meal for her because she worked with my dad in the shop all day.

I understand that historically some military branches used it in their SOS.

Like you, by the time I got to the Army, it was made with hamburger. (or something?)  And then the rest of the morning in the latrine.

In the Navy the SoS was made with chipped beef (that was aged since the civil war), So Bear what does that "SoS" really stand for?

Maybe why our gravy was better.......

Absolutely, the Navy & Air Force always had better food than the Army and Marines. Probably because they made cooks out of cooks, and the Army put cooks on the front lines & Plumbers in the Kitchen, plus they transported the food & kept what they wanted. That's why some Navy outfits might have gotten Chipped Dried Beef on Toast, and the Army got Ground Beef on Toast, which is Truly "SOS".

Thank You Merv!!

Yup, in the old days some used Chipped Beef, but by the time you & I were in the service (which was kinda "Old Days" too) they weren't about to pay for the expensive Dried Beef.

That's why I'm glad I can make my own!!

Too expensive for me to buy!
