Howdy everyone...

I have a charcoal question! I am hopefully gonna pick up an ecb gourmet, I'm waiting to hear back from the guy on craigslist. My question is that I have read a lot of conflicting opinion about what to use in it and don't know what to get. I have always personally preferred lump over briquettes. But some seem to like the briquettes in the ecb. The Kingsford competition are on sale at Costco. But I have also heard that is not the kind of Kingsford people like.

Get the Kingsford Blue Bag, the competition stuff is not that great and costs a lot more. With 4th of July around the corner Home Depot will put the two 20 lb. bags of blue on sale for about $10.

I prefer Stubbs charcoal briquettes over K blue bag, much better BBQ fuel IMHO. Royal Oak briquettes are also a very good product, I use them quite a bit as well.
 
I've almost finished my first bag of Stubb's and I like it better than any other briquettes I've bought. I decided to try it when I noticed that the bag was smaller but also heavier than other brands.
 
I use Royal Oak lump and start it with Royal Oak briqs. This make for a good clean hot bed of coals. I add splits to these coals to cook with. I haven't used KBB in several years. It has a strange odor and a ton of ash that can be a problem for air control. Give the Royal Oak a try and decide for yourself. Good luck, Joe

I will start looking for Stubbs, our Walmart has all the usual royal oak and Kingsford but not much else, we have a pretty small store.
 
Do you have a Trader Joes? Great charcoal. I use a lot of it.
