Howdie everyone.

I'm Nate from Portland Oregon.  I have been making gravlox for a few years, with mixed results, and wanted to start making cold smoked lox.

At the beginning of the spring salmon season I caught 2 fish in short order and said "I am going to make lox with the next one"

My original plan was to use my Weber Genesis and a small smoker box on on of the burners to make the lox, but after doing a few test runs with  a small smoker box I realized that it was to hot,  the smoke didn't always go where I wanted it and didn't last long enough.  I picked up a AMNPS and a maverick wireless thermometer with plans of making a cardboard box smoker.  The fish gods did not like that plan, as have lost the last 5 salmon I hooked.  To try to get out of that funk I am planning on picking up a gasser tonight in hopes I can appease the fish gods, and make some proper lox.

I will probably use the smoker for hot smoking too, but I am not thinking about that until I make lox.

Sorry to hear you have had issues smoking some lox.  What problems did you encounter when using a cardboard box.  I assume you are cold smoking it.  Yes?

When I do lox I use a gasser smoker with the burner off.  Just my AMNTS or AMNPS lit at the bottom.  Turns out perfectly.  When you are ready to start talking fish stuff, create a new thread in the fish board.

Oh and welcome to SMF

Thanks for the welcome.  I haven't caught any fish lately so I  never got to try the cardboard box smoker.  Using the gasser with a AMNPS on the bottom and the gas off is my plan.  Hopefully can find a salmon this weekend.

You could try putting all of your smoking tools away, and fool the Fish Gods into thinking you aren't ready?!?!

And Welcome to SMF !!
