Now, due to a couple medical issues, starting over At 60 and no retirement to speak of. Who am I kidding, no savings of any kind, its scary as hell. So, forgive me in advance if I ask a lot of redundant questions

For a while, I plan to be  lurking around the forum trying to soak up as much knowledge as possible. I'll be the one asking all the questions. Wish me luck.

I am starting a smoked meat, BBQ, event catering and pretty much any way I can think of to make a buck operation. My plan for now is to see if I can operate my grill outside of a couple local factory's during lunch. Hoping to get some takers. Figure in the summer the smell alone should get to some of them. I will be working some local farmers markets as well. Iowa sweet corn, garden fresh tomatoes, maybe some other veggies and my smoked meats. Take home meal that will be hard to beat for fresh and flavorful. Win for several of us at the local outdoor markets, hoping if I get them to stop once, they'll be regulars for the rest of the summer.

I'm also planning on offering small backyard and event catering. I have done this in the past and liked it a lot. Done well, it has a good income potential to go with it.

Last but not least, planning to enter a few BBQ contest, more for the education from those that are doing it right than actually thinking I will win. Can't be bad advertisement either.

Finally as a get the word out sort of thing. We have an event called RAGBRI. It's a cross state, east to west, bicycle ride. The thing has grown to multiple thousands of riders. My plan is to get registered with the group, so I can fly there banner, and follow the ride. I'll let you know how that one goes.

So here goes, welcome to Big John's BBQ.

Good afternoon and welcome to the forum, from a cloudy and rainy day here in East Texas. Lots of great people with tons of information on just about  everything.

Welcome Big John, where are you located? I wish you luck in your new venture. You said that you were going to do some comps to learn something about what the others are doing. I sincerely hope that you know that you can not possibly make any money trying to cater or vend competition Bbq. There is entirely too much that goes into comp Q for just one bite. Good luck and glad to have you here, Joe

Thanks for reading and taking the time to reply. I live in Iowa, USA, since I have already discovered this is very much an international forum. One of my 4 boys enters a few contest each year. His proudest moment so far is when he manged to best one of the Des Moines guys that had won the   BBQ Cook off show that was sponsored by Kingsford a couple years ago. He hasn't done that good again for a while, just like any competition, Anybody can win any event on any given day.

Proud Dad had to through that in.

Hey thanks for the words to the wise, Yeah I know your correct about trying to sell contest prepared meat and make a profit. I just think there would be some flavoring techniques I could adapt to my product. Hoping to get a little edge over the neighbor coming home from work, to get them to buy my take home, instead of taking the time to light up their own grill.

Welcome John and good luck. I'd love a BBQ vendor outside my shop waiting for me..

If you have the equipment, smoke a few Boston butts on the weekend and start off by selling some pulled pork sammies throughout the week!

Thanks Duke,

That's pretty much what I am planning to do. In the process of getting the license and permits from state and city.

Welcome to the group and good luck with the new start. I entered I'm first contest coming up this September. It's only an Amateur contest for me but it is still a KCBS event.
