I have located a drum that us unlined with an open head and have ordered the big poppa uds kit. Since this is my first build what do i need to do like step by step
 
If you get on the Big poppa site, they have a step by step video.
 
Step 

1  build UDS post pics as you go.

2  season post more pics.

3  get some chicken leg quarters and smoke them. Remember to post Qview.

4  eat chicken and learn from the smoke. Post results for others.

5  Fire that bad boy up for a overnight smoke. Grab a

I cant wait to do exactly that I just have to have time to pick up my drum and build it

I'd wait until your kit comes and drill the air intake holes first, then burn it out.  Don't burn lid too hot or it will warp.

There will be templates and instructions in your kit, also a video on youtube...but drilling those holes will help do the burn good. 
 
I have a UDS in which I installed two cooking grills, and I use the lower one for a water (or Apple juice) bowl. The bowl is about 10" dia and my charcoal basket is about 15" so the bowl not only serves as a liquid container, but it subs as a diffuser too
