Hard to tell from the pic.  The bottom doesn't look all that bad?

Looks like maybe something acidic was stored in it?

A partial takedown and reseasoning on the sides might or might not work?

Good luck and good smoking

Cooked onions was in it over night.

if its just surface rust, wash it in hot water and dish soap, dry it (dont just let it air dry)

and hit it with your prefrence of seasoning oil, and bake it.

I don't use soap on any cast iron. I have put it in the fire overnight. I have bead blasted it. But never soap. I have found some really nice cast iron at garage sales that they say just take it. It is in to bad of shape to ever use. I just smile and wave as I drive away.

Happy smoken.

David

I haven't used soap in it. Maybe I didn't season it good enough to start with plus it sits in my basement.

You can scrub out that stuff with a kitchen pad and oil. Basically you'll be seasoning it all over again,   Once it develops a denser type of seasoning you won't get that rusty/crusty stuff in the pores like that.

It takes a while to get a really good coating....it's a process imho.

I will give it a shot sunday maybe.

Beeswax might be hard to find?

Crisco work?

How do you season it, I will be using a oven.

I am very new to cast iron. This is the only one I have but I want to get a skillet.

I need to learn how to take care of this pan first.

It's odd. I probably have that same pot, mine was from Cabela's, and the same thing has happened. I also bought a very similar pot at "the auction". If you've ever lived in Schuylkill County, you know this place. For those who haven't yet had the luxury of visiting this weekly circus, think of a cross between a 10 acre yard sale and a flea market every Sunday morning.

The pot I bought was actually in really good shape. I've actually never re seasoned it and cook in it at least once every 2 weeks on the stove top/oven. I wonder if the iron blends changed from years ago?

Our bear camp has a frying pan that has to be 2 feet across and has been there as long as anyone remembers. It's the same way. No re seasoning and just water and a sponge to clean. The thing is like teflon!

Hey Adam, IMHO man cast iron has to kinda be "babied" in a way..... Gotta keep it oiled, I use veggie oil or lard is good too ! But it's constant with CI, it requires TLC !

My wife used it.

She won't do this again.
