Tagging is very beneficial and helpful to our community and site visitors and we need your help!

Basically, "Tags allow information from around the forum to be aggregated or grouped together.  They are labels that can be added to threads, articles and even images to tie pieces of content together to make relevant information easier to find."

Here is an example of our tag page for pulled pork where it pulls threads, articles, and images together due to the tags that have been input thus far.

We need your help tagging stuff on SMF!

As you're browsing the site, please tag the threads, articles and images with relevant tags.  We especially want to make sure that the most popular and topic specific items on the site are tagged.

We have tags for almost everything but you will no doubt find things that do not have a tag created for it yet and if you run across them and want to let me know what needs to be added, I will get to it as soon as I can.

We have over 96,000 threads that need to be tagged and around 140 articles and a ton of pictures.

If you can tag only 1 or if you can tag 1000, I will be sincerely grateful!

So what are tags?

Within the forum we have sections such as "Smoking Meat" and "Equipment" and then these are further broken down into subsections such as "Pork","Beef", "Poultry", "Smokers", etc.

Tags are a way to break things down even further into groups using labels.

For example, under the subsection "Pork", we might have tags such as spare ribs, baby back ribs, pork loin, pulled pork, pork butt, pork shoulder, pork brains, pig ears.. just to scratch the surface.

Once things are tagged, the system will begin to show related content based on these tags. In a thread about pulled pork, you would see several boxes on the right side of the page listing related threads and articles about pulled pork.

The different types of tags
  • Topic tags: related to a specific topic such as pulled pork, brining, curing bacon, etc.
  • Category tags: Usually refers to a product type such as "Charcoal Smoker"
  • Item tags: Related to a specific product such as "Weber 731001 Smokey Mountain Cooker 22.5-Inch Smoker"
  • Brand tags: Related to a specific brand such as "Masterbuilt".
How to tag a thread

When you click on a thread, look in the right sidebar about halfway down and you will see the text, "Topics Discussed".

Type some text into the box and matches will start to come up.

I typed in "pulled pork" to show you an example.

When I typed this in, you can see all of the topics that popped up. I chose Pulled-Pork by clicking the + sign.

Pulled-Pork is now showing up as a tag in the thread.

Tagging images is similar to tagging threads except that the tagging interface is in a slightly different location. On images, it is just below the right side of the picture.

Note, you can add more than 1 tag to a thread, article or image but I also think it's best to not go overboard with it. 1 to 4 tags is plenty of tags for now.

I sincerely appreciate the help and if you have any questions or if you find tags that need to be added, please post them here in this thread along with the link to the thread that needs the tag.

For instance, if you see a thread about smoking pizza but discover that we have no tags referring to pizza then you would need to let me know that.

Thank you for your help!

Well, I personally have only started a small handful of threads so far... so I just went back and tagged them all appropriately (I think?)

I will also continue to help out by tagging new untagged threads posted by others as I enjoy browsing through these forums!

I tried to tag that one under "meatloaf" and couldn't do it

Added "meatloaf" to the database.

I agree that it should also be tagged as meatloaf as well as ground beef.

I commit to doing this for every thread I look at. Anything to support the great forum that has made smoking so enjoyable for me.
